There comes a point in time you recognize you must use up materials sitting on shelves and in boxes and so I have embarked on a “waste not-want not” series of books. Fallout: We are all Downwinders is the first of the series. It combined new and thirty-plus year-old yellow one-inch gingham fabric purchased for a quilt top and has the distinction of surviving the March 2003 house fire. It seemed an appropriate substrate for a partially biographical book exploring the 1950s naïveté about above ground nuclear tests in southern Nevada and one of the population groups most immediately affected by them, Mormons. I was born in Nevada, lived in an orange fallout zone from 1952-1962, and grew up as a Mormon. Family photographs are combined with military photographs of atomic bomb blasts to provide faces to created sound bites based upon the biographies of those who lived or are living with the consequences of their exposure to fallout.
